  2. I think we need to deprecate the term PC as it relates to Windows-only computers. It's vague and confusing - given the number of OS variants in so many different hardware form factors.

    Windows is transitioning into a cloud, subscription-based system with always-on tendrils (via 'telemetry') to the outside world.     I'd argue that Linux is the leading viable PC standard despite it's server-based underpinnings. Most others are in a transitioning form; heading toward terminals or kiosks: with increasingly less local support. Call them Windows or ChromeOS or macOS (as it transitions to ARM with iOS code) or Android with Bubbles.. just don't called them 'Personal' anymore.

    The PC, as we once understood is, is being slowly killed off. We should acknowledge this.

    Thanks for mentioning MagicScroll again.

    Just wanted to let everyone know that I launched a new version on Tuesday, so it may not be as polished as usual. There are a few features missing at the moment but they should reappear over the next few days.

    The new version of MagicScroll is still very simple but there are a couple of improvements:

    MagicScroll no longer needs an internet connection on Chrome, Safari and Firefox. If you add a book from your harddrive it'll process it fully clientside and add it to your library.

    Books should load significantly faster and scrolling now adapts to the amount of text under the line, so you're able to read for longer without touching the keyboard.

    I'm still working on Android, iPad and iPhone, so users may have a bit of trouble with those platforms for a couple of days. They should be fully functional early next week.

  9. Strange list. Named '6 Best Desktop eBook Readers..' but most of the readers are online (and not specifically desctop) and too..general. Trere are no special book-reading software like ICE Book reader ( http://www.ice-graphics.com/ICEReader/IndexE.html ) and so on.

  11. I've been using the Mobipocket ebook reader on my desktop for the past 6 months and have found it to be quite good in terms of a flexible desktop reader. I've also tried the EPUB reader add-on for Firefox but overall, I've come to like the .mobi format more.

Aldiko Book Reader is one of the older eBook reader apps. It's also a great simple option for those who need it. It features support for EPUB, PDF, and Adobe DRM encrypted eBooks as well as eBook support for library books on rental. The app also comes with a clean, if somewhat antiquated interface, customization options, phone and tablet support, and global text searches inside of books. The free version comes with ads. The paid version does not. Otherwise they're basically the same.

Amazon Kindle

Amazon Kindle is one of the obvious eBook reader apps. It has one of the largest and most consistent eBook stores on the Internet. Additionally, the app has a ton of reading features, cross-device syncing, and even a large collection of free books. The UI is riddled with ads. However, the actual book reading part is free of any such nonsense. There are also a variety of customization settings while reading. It's a rock solid option for book availability alone. AIReader

AIReader is one of the newer eBook reader apps comparatively speaking. It also supports much older versions of Android. That's becoming a bit rarer these days. The app also supports most common eBook formats, including EPUB (no DRM), RTF, MOBI, PRC, and many others. The interface comes with customization options, auto-scrolling, page turning animations, and various view modes for your comfort. The app is free to use. You can buy one of the various donate version if you want to. They range from $0.99 to $9.72.

Bookari eBook Reader

Bookari was once Mantano Reader. The name changed. However, it's still one of the better eBook reader apps. It features cross-device syncing. You can also buy books directly from the service. Finally, it supports a variety of eBook formats, including EPUB2, PDF, and others. The app has a slightly different set of features for each different file type. The UI is a little more busy than we'd typically like to see. However, everything else is fairly solid. The free version contains advertising while the $5.49 pro version does not.

EbookDroid

EBookDroid is one of the better free eBook reader apps. It features support for most common file types, including DJVU, PDF, XPS, fb2, CBR and CBZ (comic books), along with the usual EPUB, RTF, MOBI, and AWZ3. For those keeping track, that's most of the formats that you run into on a daily basis. The UI is simple, but effective. Additionally, it provides dictionary support, text highlighting, free-hand annotations, and more. There is also a selection of plugins that add additional functionality. It's all free with no advertising as well.

FBReader

FBReader is another older eReader app. Like Aldiko, it's a great option for most basic use cases. That includes support for AZW3, EPUB (up to EPUB3), fb2, RTF, HTML, and even plain text documents. It uses a proprietary Google Drive cloud service to sync books between your devices. We also really liked the UI. It's a bit old, but it's effective and easy on the eyes. It even has gesture support. For now, anyway, the app is entirely free to use.

Foxit PDF Reader

Foxit is one of the most popular PDF reader apps. It's a good mixture of productivity and reading. The app supports basically all types of PDF files. Additionally, it offers annotation features, form filling features, and ConnectedPDF for privacy. For reading, it can read PDFs out loud and also supports audio and video stuff. It has probably the best cross-platform support of any eReader or PDF app. You can find Foxit on Windows, Linux, Mac, iOS, and Android. That's the big five!

FullReader

Kobo Books is another online bookstore like Amazon, Nook, and Google Play Books. The app is extremely basic. It seems like all it can do is read purchased books from the service.
