Windows 10 is great for touch screens, especially thanks to the special touch-designed apps part of the Windows Ink Workspace. But is your touchscreen not working? Sometimes it can break for seemingly no reason, so we’re here to show you how to fix your touchscreen in Windows 10.

The majority of the problems are caused by driver incompatibility. This is even more likely if the touchscreen has stopped working between your upgrade from a previous operating system to Windows 10. We’ll cover this, along with many other troubleshooting tips.

1. Run Troubleshooting

The Windows troubleshooting tool could be the quick and easy fix to any problem with your touchscreen.

Do a system search for troubleshooting and select the relevant result. In the new window, click View all from the left-hand menu. From the list that appears, click Hardware and Devices.

Click Next and run the wizard through. The tool will automatically detect issues and then repair them. However, it’s by no means comprehensive and you may need to carry on reading.

2. Calibrate the Touchscreen

When your touchscreen is slow to respond or records your touch gestures inaccurately, a re-calibration might be all it takes to bring it up to speed. Here’s how to perform a touchscreen calibration.

Do a system search for calibrate and select Calibrate the screen for pen or touch. A new window will open containing tablet PC settings.

On the Display tab, use the Setup… and the Calibrate… buttons in turn to see if this resolves the issue.

3. Disable and Re-enable the Touchscreen

Press CTRL + X and select Device Manager. Double click on Human Interface Devices to open the dropdown. Right click the listing for HID-compliant touch screen and select Disable. You’ll be asked to confirm this, so click Yes.

You now need right click the listing again, but this time select Enable. This is one of the simplest solutions, but it doesn’t always work. In fact, you may find that the issue still continues after a system restart. If that’s the case, please read on.

4. Change Power Management Settings

Windows 10 will do its best to converse power, but sometimes the settings can be overzealous and turn off your touchscreen after a period of activity.

While the touchscreen should automatically enable itself again when it detects input, this isn’t always the case. As such, you can disable the power saving of your touchscreen to see if this fixes the problem.

To begin, press Windows key + X and click Device Manager. Next, double click on Human Interface Devices, then double click the listing for HID-compliant touch screen.

This will open a new window. Switch to the Power Management tab. Untick Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power. Click OK, then restart your system.

5. Update the Drivers

A driver is a piece of software that helps your hardware. For example, your touchscreen communicates with your computer’s processor. Thus touchscreen malfunctions could be due to a faulty driver.

Following on from the instructions above, with Device Manager still open, right click the HID-compliant touch screen and select Update Driver Software….

You’ll want to Search automatically for updated driver software. This will scan Microsoft’s database for any updates available for your touchscreen device. Follow the wizard through as necessary, then restart and see if your problem is resolved.

If not, you should try going directly to the manufacturer’s website, look for their drivers page, select your device number, and download the latest driver.

With this driver downloaded, you may be able to extract it and install it automatically. However, you can select Update Driver Software… again, but this time click Browse my computer for driver software. Use Browse… to locate it, then follow the wizard through.

6. Rollback the Drivers

In Windows 10, the Windows Update also updates your hardware drivers. Unfortunately, not all driver versions work equally well. If it’s actually driver updates that are causing the problems, you should try rolling back to the default.

For this, again in Device Manager, right click the HID-compliant touch screen and then select Properties. Then switch to the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver.

You know that there’s a specific older driver version that will work but aren’t able to get to it through a rollback. Within the Driver tab select Uninstall instead and then follow the method outlined in step four above.

7. Uninstall Recent Programs

For whatever reason, some programs cause touchscreen problems. If your touchscreen has only recently broken, you should uninstall any recently added programs.

To do this, press Windows key + I to open Settings. Click Apps. Use the Sort by dropdown and select Installation date.

Look for the date when the touchscreen problem started. Working up, click each app in turn and Uninstall it. Restart your computer each time and see if it fixes the touchscreen.

8. Move to Another Room

This one sounds weird but bear with me. Other nearby electronic devices can interfere with the touchscreen. It could be caused by something you’ve got plugged into the same power bank or because you’ve got lots of computers in close proximity.

It’s simple to diagnose this, though. Take your touchscreen device somewhere else and try it. If it works, electromagnetic interference is the culprit.

To resolve, go back to the original room and turn off everything else. Then turn them back on one by one to see what causes the problem. If none of them seems to be at fault, check nearby areas for powerful equipment that could be the cause.

9. Contact the Manufacturer

Have you tried all of these tips and your touchscreen is still broken? If so, you should probably contact your system manufacturer to get them to investigate.

It’s likely that the problem is a hardware fault, rather than a system one, and they will have the expertise to fix it. You may find that you’re still covered by warranty, depending on what caused the damage.

I had to do a factory reset on my Dell Inspiron 3000 Touch Screen. Now the touch screen doesn't work and it doesn't show up anywhere you have described above.
All my drivers are up to date. Dell says my laptop is not touch screen even though it says so right on the label on the bottom and has been working as a touch screen for two years! Can I fix this?
it wont let me roll back the driver. I recently had my hard drive replaced and they upgraded my computer from windows 7 to 8 and then 10. they skipped 8.1 and thats where samsung think the tech place messed up the driver. idk but anyways i can fix my touch screen? i previously purchased windows 10 years before the hard drive failed and my touch screen worked. ive tried to enable and disable the Hid TOUCH and even uninstalled it. i dont know what to do.

I have an Acer Aspire E1-470p laptop and as of recent updates, the touchscreen has completely stopped working. It's happened often after windows updates but a few days/weeks later the touchscreen function will just suddenly start working again. However, after this recent update it has not regained it's function. It's been like this for several months (possibly a year now) and I've just been putting up with it as it's not a major issue (the laptop itself is decent and not worth replacing). I've run troubleshooting, rebooted, and no change. I can't calibrate the touchscreen, as the touchscreen has to actually work to do that. I've disabled and enabled the function, rebooted, and no change. I tried updating the drivers - apparently they're up to date. I even installed the Drivereasy app to double check, but again, they're up to date. I tried to roll back the drivers, but apparently there isn't a previous driver as the option wasn't there.
Short of taking my screen off and cleaning it with alcohol wipes (which I do NOT have the courage to try), I can't think of anything else. I'd rather not have to do a factory reset. Anyone got any ideas?
Does this kind of nonsense with drivers and viruses and all these blue screens happen with Apple products? My job software only works with windows, I wish they would make software IOS compatible. My daughter insisted on Apple book in 2009 after three PC laptops crashed on her in a matter of 4 years. She has had NO problems with her Mac as of June 2018. Granted, she has no touch screen to worry about.

I have an ICraig (Craig) CMP801 windows tablet that I recently upgraded to Win 10 from 8.1. Now my touch screen is all inverted-I touch top,it shows on bottom and right shows left etc. I've called Craig support, only to get the runaround. They said it was a Windows problem and they don't have the drivers! So I called Windows support and got a runaround with them wanting me to PAY for help?!? I've gone through a million posts on how to fix this issue but nothing has worked! I need REAL help/answers! Please let me know what I can do (before I throw this away!) It worked on Win8.1 but to save space I deleted the 'Windows.old' folder. PLEASE HELP!!

For me it was a Intel Serial IO Driver?? from the pc driver's website. This is an hp-pavilion, I looked the site using the part number in the HP support page and got to the drivers for the exact model. There I started installing all drivers until the Serial IO Driver. It says nothing about touchscreen so you have to guess. It was an Input/Output driver missing.
Some times these solutions fail to work. For me it was a Intel Serial IO Driver?? from the pc driver's website. This is a hp-pavilion-11-n000-x360, I looked the site using the part number:

I have a Dell Insprion 17. My touchscreen seems to have a mind of its own. The pointer disappears and reappears. Sometimes there are two pointers. My windows minimize and maximize at will. I spent countless hours with Dell technicians to no avail. I even sent it back. Dell replaced the LCD panel and reinstalled the operating system. Within 30 minutes it was doing the same thing. Yesterday, I installed a Windows 10 update and the problem reappeared. windows The only way to use my computer is to disable the touchscreen. I would appreciate any help.

I am trying to install an application on a public touch screen on a Windows 10 computer.
The multi-point touch driver leaves too many openings for guests to escape to the desktop, open settings, move to another window or do other things that are not desirable.
Is there any way to make the touchscreen act like a mouse, only reacting to a touch (mouse down) and release (mouse up)??
- Someone here discovered that you can set the touchscreen driver to the 'wrong' one, a mouse driver instead, which solves this issue. In case anyone else needs to do this, here are instructions:
  Open Device Manager
  Under Human Interface devices, look for Touch Screen or touchscreen device
  Right Click it and select Update Driver
  Click 'Browse my computer for driver software'
  Click 'Let me pick from list.......'
  Uncheck 'Show Compatible Driver'
  Under 'Manufacturer', select Standard System Devices
  Under Model, select USB Input Device then click next
  It will warn you that it's not the correct driver but just proceed anyway.
  After installing, the USB Input Device entry will have a 'bang' or '!'. This is ok.
  Test the touch screen to see if it is not converted to mouse cursor when touched.
My problem is that I have a tablet running windows 10 without touchscreen function so I can't access anything. This was originally a Windows 7 or 8 tablet that I upgraded while Win 10 was available free and everything worked fine but then some things started going screwy so I tried to reset the tablet. Instead of reinstalling the original windows it reinstalled the Win 10 version but set to desktop with the touch control turned off. I can't even log on let alone change settings or initiate an update. Any Ideas of how to fix this?

Viewsonic series TD2240, model#VS15556, touchscreen feature stopped working. I uploaded the most recent Viewsonic driver for that monitor. I checked and have the latest Win10 update. The Device Manager/Human Interface Devices does not show a touchscreen. I have rebooted, scratched my head, sacrificed a chicken born under a fool (intentional) moon to no avail. This monitor tilts flat which made it great to draw on and now butkus, nil, no touch screen. The monitor is on a Gateway i5, the system info says that no pen or touch is available for this display. Odd as it worked for months after I upgraded from Win 8 to Win10. Any suggestions??
My hid-compliant touch screen was deleted or it's a ghost driver now. There says the driver is no longer connected to the computer. Please reconnect. And then there's code 45.

  - Hi - I have the same problem. I have a Lenovo Yoga2 Pro running Windows 10. I am not a technical guru but capable although a bit nervous to make too many changes.
    If you say to display hidden items I see the HID Touchscreen. Under the driver tab it looks like there is no driver installed. Under the Events tab it lists and event that happened 12/23/17 where the device was 'migrated.. configured.. then started'. If you could give me some additional instructions with details that would be helpful. Thank you in advance.
Method 3 worked like magic!
I ran Windows 10 setup from a USB drive on my Dell Venue 8 Pro 3845. I can't get my touchscreen to work even from there. If all else fails, I have recently purchased a small device that allows connection of three USB male ports (it hasn't come in the mail yet) and I can connect a wireless mouse, but it would be much more convenient to use the touchscreen. Of course, I can always install touch drivers after installation, but, as I said, it would be easier overall to use the touchscreen for setup. (Wow, that was extremely redundant xD)
About touch screen problems.
Have also the problem on a trekstore wintron 7.
Response positions are diffrent over the screen. The positions in the midle were ok.
Upper and lower corners have different fails.
Tried to adjust with Calibration. This is absolutly crazy. Nothing works ok.
Pushing right upper edge results response lower left edge !!
Finger wipe up, response by down moving.
I checked the known driver problem. I used the right driver !!!
Seems to be bad general function.
Accuracy seems there a great problem.
The default cal is the best but corners on screen do not fit.
Tested it by a second item of the same type shows me the same problem !!

Darn it! I tried everything on the list and it still hasn't resolved with weird problem I'm having. I have a square - literally a 1.5” square that shows up on all screens. It popped up out of nowhere and when I reboot I have a dual cursor in there. Meaning another arrow and my mouse creates another one. The touch screen is now hit or miss and I can't seem to get rid of this box. Can't seem to find anything about it and wondering if anyone else has seen anything like it.?
hello, i have a problem with the response time or accuracy ? of the multi touchscreen. if i use the mouse or a wacom pen tablet the volume control slider in the taskbar is accurate with one digit (from 100 to 99 %) if i use the multi touchscreen it seems to get stuck for a second and does only multiple digits. ( from 100 to 95) if i hold the finger on the slider after the 'stuck' it will do one digit. this is a problem when i use musical software. the volume becomes 'jumpy'.
it seems a limitation of the drivers?? i tried all suggest solutions on this web page. can someone please help me to solve this? i need the audio software for work. there were no extra drivers for the screen (iilama multitouch)

I simply ran the troubleshooting and it worked.
I have a HP Envy 21' All-in-One PC running Windows 10. Was working fine and one day the screen started shaking and windows popping up, circles appeared on the screen. I was not able to move the mouse to any fields. I turned off the computer, waited a while and turned back on. Which fixed the problem for about a week. Then the problem came back, only worse. I called HP with no help after 3 hours on the phone but did figure out that if I turn off the Touch Screen in Device Manager, the problem went away. HP thinks my User is corrupted, and tried to create a new USER. Although the new USER did not experience the same problem with Touch Screen, I lost all of my programs and info. So it was easier to use my existing USER account and NO Touch Screen, which I didn't use anyway.

    - Pretty late to this thread but I've been having this problem for some time now and its a nightmare. I can fix it by disabling the touch screen and uninstall it but it automatically re-installs on updates. When touchscreen takes over, it is impossible to get any work done and its so bad that it typically takes 20 minutes just to disable the touch screen. When the touchscreen takes over, it opens applications, changes settings, and has even deleted some applications. Has anyone been able to solve this or at least know how to permanently disable it??
